Ai' Kapu
The Ai' Kapu was the system of restictions between men and women. For example, it was forbidden to eat with the opposite sex present. Men and women had to eat seperately. Ai' means to eat, and Kapu means sacred which translates to "sacred eating". Women were not allowed to eat pork, bananas, coconut and taro seeing as how it was too sacred for them to consume or even use for material.
Kapuhili
Kapuhili is the restrictions placed upon the maka'ainana towards the cheifs and kings. It was said that if you were to enter a cheifs personal area that you could not come into contact with his hair, or fingernails, you could not look directly at him or even be in his sight while your head is higher than his. Also you were not allowed to touch his or her shadow. It meant you were trying to steal their mana, or strenght and power, away from them.

In 1819, Kamehameha II broke this kapu system when he feasted with his mother Keopuolani, and his father's wife, Kaahumanu. This happened right after foreigners arrived sparking a cultural revolution. This was the beginning of the overthrow of the kapu system. Observances at religious temples were suspended. The effect of abolishing the kapu system was that the religious and supernautral foundations of the Hawaiian political structure was destroyed. What's truly ironic about abolishing the kapu system was that Liholiho, Keopuolani and Kaahumanu all instigated the revolt against the traditional religious ideaology and practices. Thinking they would gain power they actually lost the most from it.
